Can't stand these women. OMG, these characters are so off putting. Maybe my age is showing (54) but I do not find it entertaining to read about characters that drink every time something is wrong. And the two older sisters smoked like chimneys. I couldn't stop imagining their ramshackle, hot, poorly ventilated dwelling reeking of cigarette smoke. Speaking of their dwelling, not exactly the place I'd like to imagine spending time in. No a/c, no ventilation, what must that be like? Try uninhabitable. How the repairs cost $60,000 and there is no hot water, toilets that can have toilet paper flushed, no way to cool or heat the house, no working refrigerator (or any real appliances for that matter). Mattresses that are decades old, furniture described as scratchy and uncomfortable and so on. When they are first on the island, it is difficult to follow the time line. The way they handle their problems are dysfunctional. I'm only about 2/3 of the way through and I may not make it. One character, "a woman of a certain age" looks to be headed toward a relationship with a twenty something female protege. When the protege (who sounds like a train wreck, are we supposed to think her recklessness is edgy and attractive? Maybe for someone codependent) makes a move on the older woman and is rebuffed in a gentle way, the younger woman slaps her. What would we be saying if a male character slapped a woman who said no? The entire book was filled with incidents such as this. This book is a must skip. I read the good reviews and bought for that reason. Oh well... I loved this book, and was not disappointed. I enjoy Elin Hilderbrand's books, but some more than others ... this definitely falls into the "more" category. It was a tale of family and sisters and mothers and daughters and husbands and wives and of love and loss -- and death. I don't want to give away the story - you can get some of the storyline from other reviews, but suffice to say I enjoyed how the author wove in family past with current and hints to the future. Each of the four main characters came together to the island home of the mothers' family and each of the four were facing serious life and relationship issues, and each has some resolution by the end. I loved it ... and am hopeful more of this will come. Perhaps a sequel??
