Ebook About In this internationally bestselling novel, the author of The Swan Thieves has 'refashioned the vampire myth into a compelling...late-night page-turner' - San Francisco ChronicleLate one night, exploring her father's library, a young woman finds an ancient book and a cache of yellowing letters addressed ominously to 'My dear and unfortunate successor'. Her discovery plunges her into a world she never dreamed of - a labyrinth where the secrets of her father's past and her mother's mysterious fate connect to an evil hidden in the depths of history. In those few quiet moments, she unwittingly assumes a quest she will discover is her birthright - a hunt for the truth about Vlad the Impaler, the medieval ruler whose barbarous reign formed the basis of the Dracula myth. Deciphering obscure signs and hidden texts, reading codes worked into the fabric of medieval monastic traditions, and evading terrifying adversaries, one woman comes ever closer to the secret of her own past and a confrontation with the very definition of evil. Elizabeth Kostova's debut novel is an adventure of monumental proportions - a captivating tale that blends fact and fantasy, history and the present with an assurance that is almost unbearably suspenseful - and utterly unforgettable.'Quite extraordinary....Kostova is a natural storyteller....She has refashioned the vampire myth into a compelling contemporary novel, a late-night page-turner' - San Francisco Chronicle'Filled with fascinating details of archaic vampire lore, the splendours of the Ottoman Empire and the beauty of the Romanian countryside' - Times Literary SupplementBook The Historian Review :
I don't even know where to begin. The writing itself is technically amazing. I can see and smell everything the author describes, though I have never been to most of the places in this book. The history is fascinating, and there's plenty of it. I took sidebars while I was reading to look at maps and read more about some of the history. The characters are fleshed out, if a bit too stereotypical. But, here's the rub. This is the dullest adventure book I have ever read. The history is fascinating, but there is entirely too much of it. Everyone the characters meet propels them along in their journey or tries to stop them. Almost every librarian or historian they encounter happens to be researching the same thing they are OR trying to prevent the search from continuing...SPOILEROr so you think. The Historian turns out not to be any of the people pursuing Dracula, but Dracula himself. He's predictably vain and meta, but he's SO BORING.The ending was a bit anticlimactic, and I feel like the explanation of HOW he became undead was completely missing. How did he become a vampire and endure for half a millennium? Was it pure hatred? Magic? A deal with the devil? There's a lot of talking around the subject, a lot of Church involvement, and like the love scenes...cut to black. No real explanation, no heated passion, one foot on the floor with the lights off. It manages to be compelling and dull at the same time. If you want to read a tome of history about Vlad the Impaler with a bit of "romance" thrown in, it's probably for you. If you are looking for a steamy romance, pass. There's none of that. I'm reminded of a black and white movie from the 50's full of actors with fake posh accents and a tepid aquaintance that somehow blossoms into a lifelong love affair. You know it's going to happen, but when it actually does it's a total letdown.Man looks up from dusty stack of ancient scrolls. Glances at the icy, tidily appointed woman across the table from him, absorbed in her own work. Somehow, after days of travel, her hair is still rolled neatly at her nape, and her clothes haven't the first wrinkle. Aside from her stunning beauty and intellect, he knew that he must have her the moment he learned what a skilled hand she had with the iron. Even though she'd been taciturn and cold to him for weeks, he couldn't help himself."Darling, I think I may be in love with you," he blurts out.She looks up, her face an inscrutable mask, as usual. "Of course you are. It can't possibly work between us.""But I love you. Marry me!""You fool. Of course I will marry you."Closed lip kiss, fade to black...This one is a love/hate for me. I have never heard an audio book so well read. The book includes American, British, Scottish, Italian, Turkish, Hungarian, Romanian, and Bulgarian characters. each character is read by a different reader who is at least bilingual in English and the target language, at least as far as I can tell. The effect on the realism of this book even though the book touches the world beyond, but no spoilers, would be hard to over estimate. This gives the book a cinematic quality. This is the way a book should be read, or listened to! This is the most effective audio book I have listened to, so far.
